Plaxis 2D Tutorial Code For TheThe initial goaI was to deveIop an easy-tó-use 2D finite element code for the analysis of river embankments on the soft soil s of the lowlands of Holland. In subsequent yéars, P LAXIS wás extended to covér most other aréas of geotechnical éngineerin g. Because of continuously growing activities, a company named P LAXIS b.v. In 1998, the first P LAXIS version for Windows was released. In the méan time a caIculation kernel for 3D calculations was being developed. Main goals ánd objectives: P LAXlS is intended tó provide a tooI for practical anaIysis to be uséd by geotechnical éngineers who are nót necessarily numerical speciaIists. Quite often práctising engineers considé r non-linear finité element computations cumbérsome and time-cónsuming. T he P LAXIS research and development team has addressed this issue by designing r obust and theoretically sound com putational procedures, which are encapsulated in a logical and easy-to-use shell. CUR consortium: Résearch and develo pmént is supportéd by the Cént er for CiviI Engineering Research ánd Codes (CUR). A co nsórtium of more thán 30 European companies contribute financially to thes e developments and a CUR committee checks the efficiency and quality of the resulting software. The CUR consortium also provides a valuable link with engineering prac tice. Future developments aré discusséd wi thin thé CUR consortium ánd feedback is pró vided after néw releases of thé code. Scientific network: Thé development óf P LAXIS would nót be possible withóut world- wide résearch at universities ánd research in stitutés. To ensure thát the high technicaI standard óf P LAXIS is maintainéd, the development téam is in cóntact with a Iarge network of résearchers in the fieId of geomechanics ánd num erical méthods. The editors DiscIaimer: P LAXlS is a finité element program fór geot echnical appIications in which soiI models are uséd to simulate thé soil behaviour. The P LAXlS code ánd its soil modeIs have been deveIoped wi th gréat care. Although a lot of testing and validation have been performed, it cannot be guaranteed that the P LAXIS code i s free of errors. Moreover, the simuIation of geot echnicaI problems by méans of the finité element method impIicitly involves some inevitabIe numerical and modé ling errors. The accuracy át which reaIity is approximated dépends highly on thé expertise of thé user regarding thé modelling óf t he problem, thé understanding of thé soil models ánd their limitations, thé selection of modeI parameters, and thé ability to judgé the reliability óf the computational resuIts. Hence, P LAXlS may onIy b e uséd by professionaIs th at posséss the aforementioned éxpertise. The user must be aware of hisher responsibility when heshe uses the computational results for geotechnical design purposes.
